Applications of stable isotopes

Stable isotopes are not radioactive, and have no special protection requirements in the process of separation, synthesis and application of labeled compounds. They are easy to operate, safe to use and non-toxic, and can be directly used in animal and human nutrition, clinical medical research and medical diagnosis, and many other fields. At present, deuterium gas (D2), boron 10 (10B) and a few other products have been industrialized and widely used. Deuterium gas is important to produce by electrolysis of heavy water. Besides deuterium lamps, deuterium reagents, NUCLEAR magnetic resonance and nuclear fusion applications, deuterium gas is mainly used in the fiber industry to produce low-peak water fiber. 10B is used to control the reaction rate of nuclear reactors. It is estimated that deuterium and boron 10 are currently the most widely used isotope gas products, and that carbon 13 (13C), nitrogen 15 (15N2), oxygen 18 (18O2), neon 22 (22Ne) isotope gases and isotope compound reagents have wide applications in many studies and analyses.

1. in the field of medicine, stability of isotope products currently has been widely used in clinical research in the field of medicine, a variety of disease diagnosis and identification, a judgment, evaluation of therapeutic effect, viscera function research and development of new drugs, such as PET diagnosis, 13 c - urea breath method to detect helicobacter pylori, tumor therapy (boron neutron capture therapy), drug research, etc.

2. in the field of life science, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS) spectrum research different populations of protein structure, function and so on need stability isotope integration technology, including the method of isotope coded affinity tag (ICATTM), stable isotope labeling amino acids in cell culture technology (SILAC), target protein quantitative analysis method for the absolute (AQUATM), etc. Stable isotopes are introduced into biological macromolecules such as proteins through biological metabolism, enzymatic hydrolysis or chemistry, and the structure diagram of biological macromolecules can be obtained by using molecular biology software after large instrument analysis.

Studies on energy metabolism focus on sports medicine, child nutrition, food nutrition, weight loss and astronaut diet. The stable isotope tracer method is one of the methods to study metabolism. The commonly used stable isotopes are 2H, 15N, 13C, 18O, etc. For example, the use of 2H or 18O labeled doubly-labeled water (DLW) could be a new way to assess energy consumption in human body. This could be preliminarily applied in laboratory and field studies in the field of physical science, making it the most accurate way to assess energy metabolism.

In the field of agricultural scientific research, stable isotopes 15N and 13C are widely used in plant physiological and biochemical research, soil and plant nutrition research, plant protection research, improvement research of crops such as rice, flowers and agricultural products, and nitrogen cycle research of grassland. Most stable isotope products used in agriculture are low abundance products. Inorganic salts with low abundance such as 15N labeled urea, 15N labeled ammonium sulfate, 15N labeled ammonium nitrate and 15N labeled ammonium chloride are commonly used fertilizer tracers.

3. In environmental science, the composition of stable isotopes varies under different environmental conditions, and nitrogen isotopes are a good indicator of pollutants. In the monitoring of ecosystem pollution, the measured 15N value can also be used as an indicator of the degree of environmental pollution in water areas. By using stable isotope techniques, ecologists can detect many ecological processes that change over time without interfering with the natural state of the ecosystem and the nature of the elements. Stable isotope 15N can be used to determine the relative nitrogen ratio obtained by plants through nitrogen fixation or absorption of soil NH4+ and NO3-. Determine the rate of carbon and nitrogen turnover in soil; Determine the source of N2O (nitrifying bacteria or denitrifying bacteria); Determining the length of the food chain; Determining the sources of air and water pollutants; How to determine the distribution area of plants.

4. In the field of analysis and testing, the stability isotope technology plays a unique role in the detection of food, pesticide residues, stimulants and heroin. It is widely used in geology, geochemistry, paleontology, ecology and other research. Stable isotopic labeled compound can also be used as internal standard for NMR and mass spectrometer.

In the field of lasers, neon isotopes 20Ne, 22Ne and 3He are the key materials for the preparation of he-ne lasers. This kind of laser can be used in laser gyro, and laser gyro is a new inertial navigation component, which is mainly used in various types and specifications of satellite, aircraft, ships navigation and positioning, orientation system.

Application in the field of nuclear power generation: 10B is used to control the nuclear reaction speed, so that the nuclear reactor can operate safely and stably; Protective materials used in nuclear reactors. 10B is also used to make neutron detector tubes instead of helium 3.

5. In the semiconductor industry, the silicon isotope 28Si has better crystal structure and improved thermal conductivity, which can be used as the base material of semiconductor chip, and alleviate the temperature increase caused by the semiconductor chip size reduction and current density increase. ND3 can be used to make passivated thin layers of silicon nitride and silicon oxynitride. When diffused deuterium replaces lost oxygen, deuterium with a heavier meson mass increases specific transistor life.
