How much volume is reduced after H2 liquefaction

As Japan has little land available for onshore wind and solar farms, Japan is planning to import large quantities of clean H2.

Suiso Frontier ("suiso" refers to "hydrogen" in Japan) plays a key role in the hystra demonstration project (hydrogen energy supply chain Technology Research Association). It can transport a large amount of hydrogen made from Australian lignite to Kobe, Japan, over 9000 kilometers.

The ship's vacuum insulated hydrogen storage tank (currently built by Harima works and will be installed by the end of 2020) will be able to transport 1250 square meters of liquefied hydrogen (LH2) at a temperature of minus 253 ° C. The liquefaction process reduces the volume of hydrogen by 800 times.

This technology is similar to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship. Khi built the first LNG ship in Asia in 1981. Kawasaki plans to commercialize liquid hydrogen containers around 2030 and will develop larger containers.
