Small helium gas as a huge role (Part Ⅱ)

Small helium gas plays a huge role (Part Ⅱ)

5: Barcode scanner

◆ The most common contact with helium in our daily life is in the supermarket. The barcode scanner uses the helium-neon laser, also known as the HeNe laser, and they use a 10:1 ratio of helium to the gas of neon. The HeNe lasers are inexpensive and have a low energy consumption. It is also widely used in biomedical engineering, optical disc reading and microscopy.

6: welding

◆ Welding is also one of our common helium applications. About 23% of the world's helium supply is used for welding.

7: Leak check

Helium also has the function of leak inspection, scientists use helium spraying welding seams. If there is a leak, helium will enter it, because helium has the second smallest atom of all elements (hydrogen is smaller, but it's inert, which means it doesn't move). So helium can detect really small leaks, which helps ensure that tanks and pipes are sealed.

8: airship

◆ Helium is not only light but also not easy to burn, so it is a good choice for airships.

9: the balloon

◆ Fill a balloon with helium. The main reason is that helium is lighter than air, so the balloon can fly high in the sky.
