Neon is a gaseous discharge lamp. To make a neon lamp, the gas is first drawn out of a thin glass tube with electrodes and then filled with inert gas (helium, neon, nitrogen) or mercury vapor. Thus, when a high voltage is applied to the neon electrode, the electrons in the electrode escape under the action of an electric field and hit the gas atoms. A large number of gas atoms are excited and ionized, thus "filling" the energy. This energy is released in the form of light radiation, and the neon lights glow.
